:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Kerry Kilburn -- Too preachy, info-dumpy, and has a big question mark ending : As an academician trained in the study of mammals, who cares deeply about conservation, and who loves the mountains, I thought this book would be a perfect fit for me. It should have been, but the author never did, to my mind, find the right way to strike a balance between the scientific and technical information she wanted to teach her readers, her passion for all things conservation (seriously, 2 pages on the evils of beef?), and the actual story itself. So I felt that sometimes I was reading a textbook or instruction manual, sometimes a political manifesto, and only sometimes a mystery/thriller. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Virginia Boding -- Interesting, but.... : I liked the story, but have three concerns. I sure would like to have seen what the main character looked like. "She" just doesn't describe her adequately. Secondly, I was disappointed in the author's treatment of ranchers. There are a lot of hard working conservation conscious ranchers who do work with the wildlife. Believe it or not, cattle and wildlife can coexist when managed properly. Final note, what is so awful about enjoying meat of all kinds, including beef, lamb, pork, fish and chicken? ( Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hazel Addams -- Gripping adventure mystery with insights into field biology and a well developed protagonist! : I was hooked from the opening sentence about ‘when the shooting started’ but really loved this book for two reasons. First, the insights into what it’s like both technically and socially to be a field biologist. Second, the portrayal of the relationship between Alex and her ex-boyfriend. While the book is interesting from the perspective of wildlife conservation (you will learn quite a bit of the effort involved in tracking & counting wildlife) the heroine is definitely a liberal, vegetarian loving, climate change embracing activist. Overall it’s decent & suspenseful but the ending leaves you totally up in the air which for me was unsatisfactory. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Superwoman in the woods : This book was, indeed, suspenseful and I enjoyed learning about wolverines, but I don’t think I’ll be reading more by this author. I’m glad our protagonist triumphed over the truly bad Bad Guys in this story, and I liked a couple of the twists the author made. Still, our heroine Alex was unbelievably capable—experienced in extreme problem solving, firearms and marksmanship, explosive devices, small engine repair, survival skills, “casual” martial arts, electrical wiring , topographical map-reading and orienteering, backpacking, camping and certainly some other abilities I’ve failed to mention. Incidentally, she has also inspired undying devotion from.....Dexter?....who shows up at extremely opportune moments to save her from certain death. And she’s absolutely fearless, in spite of the “uneasiness” that overtakes her frequently. I think I’ll stick with Anna Pigeon. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021 )

And, I am sorry, but reading intricate details of 4 forest walks a day while setting up cameras got dull. I would pay no more than $2.99 to read this. But it works , I live in the sticks lots of trees like meat. Alex sounded too good to be true but it works and she grew on me good book. My German shepherds would probably like her top.
